Austin Energy rebates: EV chargers, solar, thermostats

Prepare your Austin Energy rebate applications: up to $500 for an eligible home EV charger, $4,000 for solar, $50 plus credits for a smart thermostat.

Austin Energy's biggest residential rebates right now: a qualified new Level 2 home charging station gets 50% of its purchase price back, up to $500. Austin Energy electric service, a purchased or leased plug-in EV, and Power Partner EV enrollment are required. The station must be Power Partner EV compatible, or paired with a qualifying telematics-enabled vehicle, and installed at the applicant's address. Rooftop solar through a participating contractor carries a $4,000 rebate plus the current 12.89 cents per kWh Value of Solar bill credit for the energy your system produces. A new smart thermostat earns a $50 rebate, plus $75 for enrolling in Power Partner and $30 a year for staying enrolled. The EV rebate application follows installation. For solar, take the Solar Rebate Quiz, use a participating contractor, and receive Austin Energy's Solar Rebate Confirmation Letter before installation. The EV and thermostat online applications cannot be saved and must be completed in one session.

The steps, in order

  1. EV charger: enroll in Power Partner EV and install an eligible new Level 2 station at your address in line with applicable electrical codes. Apply after installation for 50% of the station purchase price, up to $500.
  2. EV application: the Austin Energy account holder submits the active electric account number, charging station manufacturer and model, VIN, and fully paid charging-station receipt. Complete it in one session; it cannot be saved and times out after one hour of inactivity.
  3. Solar: take the Solar Rebate Quiz, give the reference number to a participating contractor, and receive the Solar Rebate Confirmation Letter before installation. The qualifying new system must be at least 3 kW DC, mostly free of shade, and connected to your Austin Energy residential account.
  4. Thermostat: buy an eligible model, apply for the $50 rebate within 90 days, then enroll in Power Partner for $75 plus $30 a year.
  5. Check rebate status online with the confirmation number and your utility account number.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Starting the online application without documents. The form cannot be saved and times out.
  • Using a non-participating solar contractor. Only participating contractors can offer the Austin Energy rebate.
  • Assuming installation costs are rebated. The EV rebate covers 50% of the eligible station purchase price, up to $500; Power Partner EV enrollment is required. Installations must meet applicable electrical codes, and stations and plug-in receptacles must be UL, ETL or cETL listed.
  • Missing the 90-day window on the thermostat rebate.
