Austin Energy pays money back: up to $1,200 for a home EV charger, $4,000 for solar, $50 plus credits for a smart thermostat. Most customers never claim them.

The steps, in order

  1. EV charger: use a licensed electrician and a permitted install; apply online after installation for 50% back, up to $1,200.
  2. Have the application packet ready before you start: utility account number, electrician license number, charger model, VIN, purchase proof, and paid invoices. The form times out and cannot be saved mid-way.
  3. Solar: get quotes from Austin Energy participating contractors only; they are the ones who can offer the $4,000 rebate.
  4. Thermostat: buy an eligible model, apply for the $50 rebate within 90 days, then enroll in Power Partner for $75 plus $30 a year.
  5. Check rebate status online with the confirmation number and your utility account number.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Starting the online application without documents. The form cannot be saved and times out.
  • Using a non-participating solar contractor. Only participating contractors can offer the Austin Energy rebate.
  • Skipping the permit. Hard-wired EV chargers need a City of Austin electrical permit and inspection.
  • Missing the 90-day window on the thermostat rebate.
