Austin alarm permits and false alarm appeals

Austin requires a permit for every monitored or audible alarm, renewed each year. False-alarm appeals exist, but only for permitted systems.

Short answer

If your Austin home or business has a monitored or audible alarm system, you need an alarm permit for each alarmed location, and it must be renewed every year. Apply through the city's Alarm Administration Portal, and the permit is not active until the fee is paid and any unpaid response fees are cleared. Apartment tenants with their own unit alarm need a residential permit. False alarms carry response fees, and an appeal is only possible if the alarm was permitted when it went off: gather proof of the active permit and your evidence, then send the Appeal Request Form to DSD Alarm Administration by mail or email. Moving? Permits do not transfer: cancel in writing and apply fresh at the new address.

Who this is for

Austin residents and businesses with a burglar alarm, and anyone who got a false-alarm fee notice.

The steps, in order

  1. Check whether your system needs a permit: any monitored or audible alarm at an Austin address needs one, including a tenant's unit alarm in an apartment.
  2. Apply through the Alarm Administration Portal (or the web form) and pick the right type: residential, commercial, or principal for apartment common areas.
  3. Pay the invoice in the portal; the permit is not active until the fee and any outstanding response fees are paid.
  4. Renew every year. The city emails a renewal notice about 30 days ahead, but the renewal is your responsibility even without it.
  5. Fighting a false-alarm fee? Appeals are only for permitted alarms: send the Appeal Request Form with your permit proof and evidence to DSD Alarm Administration.
  6. Moving or cancelling service? Cancel the permit in writing on the cancellation web form; it cannot be canceled by phone.

Have this ready

  • The alarmed address and whether it is in Austin's full-purpose jurisdiction
  • Your alarm company name
  • The portal account email
  • For appeals: the active permit number and supporting documents

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the alarm company registered you. The permit is the owner's or tenant's responsibility.
  • Letting the permit lapse and then trying to appeal a false alarm. Non-permitted users cannot appeal.
  • Skipping the written cancellation when you move. Fees keep accruing at the old address.
  • Ignoring renewal notices. Late renewals can add fees.

Common questions

Do I need an alarm permit in Austin?

Yes, for any monitored or local audible alarm at a home or business in Austin's full-purpose jurisdiction. One permit per alarmed location, renewed annually.

Can I appeal a false alarm fee?

Only if the alarm had an active permit when it went off. Send the Appeal Request Form with proof of the permit and your evidence to DSD Alarm Administration by mail or email.

I am moving. Does my alarm permit move with me?

No. Cancel the old permit in writing using the cancellation web form, then apply for a new permit at the new address.
